It’s not unusual for us to receive a panic email or phone call. Most often, the reason is a request for a quick turnaround for a special project that has come up, or a reprint of a previously printed piece that someone has forgotten to reorder. The request is often accompanied with a comment such as, “We’ll pay extra for overtime”.

These situations are usually a simple fix for us. In general, we have enough flexibility built into our production capacity to accommodate rush job requests. This is not always the case, however, especially for jobs with special needs. Recently, a regular customer called to say they needed a large project, very quickly. They were opening a new office in Tampa and required 2500, five-color,16-page corporate brochures in two days. The ‘highest-quality’ specifications for the brochures required a branded paper which was not on our floor. Adding to the dilemma was the fact that our 5-color Heidelberg Speedmaster press had a firm production schedule for the next three days.

It has never been our policy to charge overime for rush jobs. If we can meet a rush schedule, we will. If we can’t, we will say so immediately and not promise something we cannot deliver.

In the case above, we were able to rectify the situation by printing, binding and shipping a temporary supply of 250, full-color booklets to Tampa- the very next day. We were able to do this because we had another production option to offer our customer… our Xerox 700 digital color press… ideal for rush, small quantity, full-color projects.
