Panic calls. They happen all too often. We received a frantic telephone call at noon recently from a company needing two flyers printed in full-color which had to be delivered by end of day to complete a time-sensitive mailing. The first flyer was a 4000 run, the second 13000. The price was a major concern.

The caller explained their color copier was too slow to make the deadline. They had contacted several other local printing companies, but found only one could complete both flyers by 5PM. However, that printer only offered digital printing, which put the price of the high quantity flyer way beyond reasonable.

Multicolor Printing was able to complete and deliver both items in just over three hours and meet their budget. This would not have been possible unless we offered both digital and offset printing. The lower quantity flyer was printed digitally on our Xerox Digital Color Press. The higher quantity flyer was printed on our Heidelberg Speedmaster 5-color offset press. Having BOTH digital and offset capability allowed us to produce each flyer  on equipment best suited for their required quantities. This efficiency kept their pricing to a minimum.

What are the lessons learned? There are at least 3…

1. Don’t waste your valuable time. Call Multicolor Printing FIRST!
2. Know the capabilities of your printing vendor. Make sure they offer a variety of production options to efficiently produce your various printing needs. Many storefront printers have very limited in-house production equipment (some have none). They outsource much of their work to internet printers and don’t tell you.
3. It’s doubtful you’ll find any printing company in South Florida (maybe the entire state) able to match Multicolor Printing’s in-house production capabilities which include: offset printing, digital printing, wide-format inkjet, embossing, foil stamping, die-cutting, and letterpress printing.

A recent article appearing in Scientific American strongly supports other evidence that most people understand and remember text better when read on paper rather than on an electronic screen. This may help explain why Direct Mail is exceedingly more successful than email marketing. (See this)

The article states that since 1980, more than one hundred studies have been conducted in the United States, U.K. Taiwan, Sweden, Norway, France and Japan to explore how people read and comprehend on paper versus screens.  Overwhelmingly, the studies conclude that readers prefer real paper over its electronic counterpart and achieve higher levels of comprehension and retention with paper.

Keller Medical, Inc. (Stuart, Florida) contacted Multicolor Printing recently for the production of  ‘Take-One’ counter displays for their Marsupial® product brochures. The Marsupial® is a post surgery drain pouch produced by Keller Medical which also manufacturers the Keller Funnel, a delivery system for silicon gel breast augmentation used successfully in more than 50,000+ augmentation and reconstruction procedures.

The counter display consists of two, die cut parts, a 10 x 12, stand-up backboard and a 8.5 x 5.5,  take one pocket designed to hold 4 x 9 rack brochures. Both of the parts were printed in full color on 100# coated cover stock utilizing our in-house, Xerox 700, digital color press. After printing, the two pieces were mounted with spray adhesive to 60pt chipboard and die cut utilizing a set of custom cutting dies, one for each piece. The final step in the construction process was to mount the backboard to a double-wing easel.

The result, once the two pieces are joined by fitting each part through die-cut slots, is a counter display which will be seen in doctor’s offices around the globe.

It wasn’t long ago when business of all sizes utilized printed newsletters in their strategic marketing mix. Then came the digital revolution and its pundits proclaiming, ‘eNewsletters rule’, ‘print is dead’, or some other end-of-print prediction. How wrong they were (and continue to be).

As noted above, we offer both offset and digital printing, so it’s not unusual for us to use a combination of both printing formats on one project. For instance, we utilize offset and digital printing methods quite frequently on invitation packages in which the invitations will print via offset, but the RSVP cards will print digitally. Books are another example. We often print the full-color covers utilizing offset printing, but the black and white text pages will print on our digital press.
